The best way to handle algae is to NOT let it get started in the first place by having a weekly service account. There are few things better to rid a pool of algae than regular professional cleaning and maintenance. Algae destroys pool surfaces, so it's best NOT to let it take over. Algae populations will double in size every 24 hours in the right conditions, so a tiny spot of green or black can get out of hand in a matter of days.
If you have algae;
- Get a 10 point NSF water test.
- Shock the pool with 20 to 50 ppm Chlorine if test warrants
- Brush down the sides and bottom of the pool to release anchored algae.
- Clean the pool filter
- Run the pump for 24 hours
- Retest the water and shock AGAIN if necessary.
- Clean the pool filter
- Adjust borates
- Be CAREFUL with algaecides as many of them are copper based and they can STAIN your pool even if used properly.
- Stop using Chlorine Tablets Year around
